Deer Dog
I wondered why my Chihuahua, Wyatt, had such long legs and such a deep chest. He's taller than other Chi's in the neighborhood and his nose is longer. I had begun to think that perhaps there was an Italian Greyhound in his background somewhere. That perhaps he wasn't the "pure" Chihuahua I had believed he was. Now, when you get a puppy through the husband of the breeder's granddaughter, and for free, you don't ask alot of questions. You have to take a lot of things on faith. As soon as I laid eyes on Wyatt I didn't care if he was "pure" or not. That sweet face and big dark eyes won my heart in a heartbeat.
Nothing changed over the last eleven months. He won me, My Other Half, and one of our cats, Mr. Oliver, over. Miss Dolly is another story. She's a crotchety old feline (but we love her just the same). As long as we understand and adhere to her priorities, first and foremost, life is good. Feed her, give her fresh water, keep her litterbox clean, and scratch her ears (when she allows it) and she's satisfied. The occassional treat goes without saying. But to show acceptance for this new creature in her sphere of influence and without her approval? Well! She does, however, occassionally forget that she's crotchety and plays with Wyatt, then recalls her stand on the matter and hisses and spits at him. She turns her back and begins to groom herself as if he interupted her from doing just that.
Anyway. I was reading messages on a Yahoo! group I belong to about Chihuahua's. A member mentioned that a new neighbor moved in with their "reindeer" Chihuahua. Reindeer? That caught my attention very quickly. After messages back and forth among several members, we learned that there is indeed a "deerhead" body type along with the common "appledome" body type (apple referring to the shaping of the head). The "apple" type is the more common and is what most everyone recognizes as a Chihuahua.
The "deer" body type is the older type and is not as common, but is every bit a Chihuahua as the more common "apple" type. I was happy to know that Wyatt is "pure", but even happier to know that he is the unique "deer" type. I never intended to breed Wyatt; he was always meant to be a pet. Wyatt has deer coloring and when he lays down, he looks like a little deer.
Here's a picture of Wyatt. I believe him to be the poster boy for the deer-type Chihuahua.

Isn't he a sweetie? No wonder he stole my heart.

HELLO DEBORAH:
I AM SEARCHING THE WEB TO FIND A REINDEER CHIHUAHUA FOR MY FRIENDS MOTHER.
THIS IS HOW I GOT CONNECTED TO YOUR BLOG. FUNNY AND INTERESTING.
I AM IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AND AM TRYING TO FIND A RESCUE GROUP INSTEAD OF A BREEDER. DO YOU KNOW OF ANY GROUPS I CAN CONTACT.
WYATT IS A BEAUTY, IT'S NO WONDER THAT SHE WANTS ONE LIKE HIM.
ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
THANK YOU
We had a reindeer too. Her name was Taco, but had been horribly abused by the alcoholic who owned her so by the time we bought her from him she was pretty much ruined in the discipline area. We grew to love her despite the fact she would not, could not or just flatly refused to be housebroken so we had to make a choice of not having one corner of our living room used for the "relief area" for the dog or if we wanted our new carpting in the living room to last awhile. Sadly we had to give up the dog and it is still grieving us all. But I even tried leaving her outside on a run leash right by my patio for an entire day!!! Granted I left the back door open to keep an eye on her and make sure when she tipped over the water bowl, I had it filled up again. First thing she did upon being let back inside was head to "her" corner of our living room and relieve herself.
We have searched and searched for another one like her (a male one!) and haven't found one. Has anyone here had any luck finding one? HELP!! I love those little dogs and since I am now disabled and am home 99% of the time I would LOVE having one like her (one who doesn't use the house as a toity though) to hang out with me. It gets lonely with one kid grown and out of state and the other not far behind.
Any ideas???
HELLO, WELL, I WAS VISITING MY FRIEND BECAUSE SHE WAS FOUND TO HAVE CANCER. AND SHE SHOWED ME HER CHIHUAHUAS. ONE WAS A MALE REINDEER. AND THERE WAS A TINY ONE, HER NAME IS CHILINDRINA. SHE IS CHOCOLATE COLORED. SHE IS TINY. HER DAD IS BIGGER. ANYWAY, I ENDED UP TAKUING THE LIL CHILINDRINA HOME. AND GUESS WHAT? SHE PLAYS WITH THE CATS. SHE IS USED TO CATS, BECAUSE MY FRIEND HAS CATS. SHE GAVE IT TO ME BECAUSE SHE CAN'T CONTINUE TO TAKE CARE OF ALL OF HER PETS.
I too have a reindeer chihuahua. I thought maybe it was a chihuahua mixed with miniature pincher at first, but the Vet. said she was a reindeer chihuahua. I am very pleased to see your picture. Yours is the only other one that I have seen besides my dog. Mine is black & brown(Miniature pincher color).I was going to post a picture of her, but I do not know how to on this "post a comment" window.
I have two "deerhead" chihuahuas. Their names are Linda and Lulu. We've had Linda for more than a year now and we love her. She came from an abusive family too, and cannot be housebroken. Her puppy, one of the six that Linda gave birth to, is sitting on my lap right now, trying to bite my fingers. She came out "deerhead", but he sister came out "applehead" due to the father being "applehead" but we love her jsut the same. She's all grown up now, around 2 lbs. Of course we can't breed her, but she's the cutest little thing you've ever seen. Sometimes though, she looks like a miniature greyhound, because he legs are long (but not too long) and she's skinny by nature. She's very athletic and loves being outside, but she can't sleep on her own! I think the cutest thing about her is how she crawls up the couch to try to sleep on top of us when we're watching TV. She's the very example of a "deerhead" but we love her and her mother.
So there are such things as reindeer chihuahuas????? is there a web sit where i can see pictures of these reindeers?? and rene are you still looking for a reindeer??
I too have a reindeer. She's the the cutest little doggie I ever seen . My sister-in-law was at a flea market in Corbin,Ky. An got hers then when hers had a litter. I was granted the most loveable caring little female puppy I could ever imagine. Im so attached to her I feel like she's my real daughter She goes everywhere with me. Loves to ride in the car.Sunbathe Runs an plays like a reindeer. I too an having trouble finding information on these types of dogs. they seem to be pretty rare. But if you ever find one "it's a true blessing" She was very little trouble house trainning. I wish everyone looking the very best of luck.
Thanks

P.S.I will try to send a Pic......
I also have a reindeer chi. He weighs 10pounds and is 5 months. I believe he's done growing. He's tall with long legs, but his ears don't completely stand up. Everyone doesn't believe he's a chi, since he's big and doesn't resemble the TACO BELL CHI. However, I bought him at 3 months and he was fully potty trained to go outdoors. SMART! saved me alot of money. On the other hand, my new chi- a mini chi- which is an apple head- is sooooo dificult to potty train. I'm so over buying puppy pads, but at least she goes on them. Well, see if she learns from her giant chi partner which towers her at 2 pounds.(They are only 2 months apart. HAHAHA)
i am in the possession of a three year old "deer type" chi. her name is poco(short for poquito). she is the absolute ruler of my universe and i love her dearly. i live in so. cal. and can be reached at mgrkrug@toast.net.

I too didn't know about 'reindeer' Chi's, until I was changing the bird cages with old 'Penney Saver/Little Nickle' type papers, and found an ad in there for Chi Puppies. We went out there, and we picked a male, he looked as though there was a 'powder puff' look to him. We didn't know what that was, and this was the first this breeder ever threw like that. I met both the parents (Mom - black and Tan, Dad White with black and black ticking). Both parents had Choc and Blue in the backgrounds, so after we researched this, we found we have a Lilac Chihuahua! He is CKC registerable, but I haven't done it yet. I believe he will weigh more than 6lbs, as he is probably near 5 and he'll be 16 wks tomorrow. He is ADORABLE, and I have to say frankly, that he has been one of the most interesting dogs to watch grow up. He went from all blue when we met him - around 4 wks, to a Choc head when we picked him up, just over 6 weeks old. then his body went chocolate and he had a blue tail with a white tip. Now, I can see the Lilac in his face, and he's starting to get a milder version of that powder puff look again! Anyway, he's a very neat puppy inside as well, and we both love him tons :) He is trying to take charge of our house. Interesting run too! Tryin to run our 8lb 1/2 Pom and 1/2 Shih-Tzu, and our 2 BIG cats. one is at least 12lbs, and the other is in the 15 - 20lb range!! Then he is very jealous of them all and that includes the parrots (1 YNA, 2 DYH and a Senegal). Potty training is STILL a chore, but we are working on it. I'd like to get a pic on here or link. Will try to figure that out later, but our dog is something special, inside and out! :)

We just found out yesterday that our free (given to us by some people in a parking lot in Costa Mesa, Ca) chi is a reindeer too! At just two pounds, she was the cutest little thing I had ever seen, but as she grew--and her legs grew too, we began to think that she was mixed with a rat terrier or mini greyhound. Our vet didn't know for sure, but we met a breeder of reindeer from TN who told us we had a rare breed. Unfortunately, we found this out as we were coming from having her spayed!

I met a girl whose parents wanted to give thier chi away (for free). I was so excited. I was expecting a small little chi, insteed, thise funny odd creature comes out of the car. He looked like he was standing of stilts. I was his 3rd/4rth home (and final). He too, was abused. His tail isn't stright it curves. He use to pee inside my house and even once in my bed (while we where asleep). Not anymore. He only goes outside. has the best personality in the world and makes me laugh and smile everyday. I would love to see pictures of everyone's reinder chi. I bet that my little man has the longet legs. email me: ananyevana@yahoo.com

It's very interesting to read your post, as well as all of these comments, because I seem to have experienced the same thing that everyone else did regarding the deer chi. My Noah is so precious, but I'm glad I eventually figured out he was a deer chihuahua because I get really annoyed when people ask me if I'm SURE he's really a chihuahua. I was thinking of compiling a scrapbook of deer chihuahuas, so if anyone would be interested in e-mailing me pictures of their deer chis with the dog's name that would be awesome. Hi, I'm rebekah. I have a little deer chi as well. Her name is Poco. I got her from a local rescue place. People always ask me is she is a rat terrier or mini pincher. When i tell them she's a deer chi, they just look at me funny and nod. lol
Right now she is curled up in my lap. I'm playing some nice music trying to drown out the pops and cracks of the firecrackers. so far is working pretty good, but it hasn't hit midnight here yet.
anyway i have a few pic up on my blog, I need to post some more.
We were just given a 4-mos-old female Chi, shinny black with tan face & large ears. Her breeder had bred with intentions of selling but got so emotional & "picky" in finding homes, he refused to go thru with selling. He knew us (my husband & I, no kids & our tiny, apple-head white 12-yr-old chi baby he had met before), so he offered her to us. She is tiny except for her long legs, long nose & look of a mini-doberman. Several said to us "she's a mix, not a full-chi" (she looks nothing like our tiny-apple-head). When I started to read various on-line info, I discovered the "deer-like" appearance which led me to this site. She is just a bundle of energy & smart! She has adopted me as her mommy & at first would snarl at even my husband who fell in love with her, too. She also appears to have developed quite a separation anxiety from me creating an issue in finding a safe place to leave her because she climbs/jumps, etc & cannot tolerate a closed-area. After working with her just over a weekend, she now has taken to my husband & even Lucy, our 12-yr-old apple-head (although Lucy has developed no love for her after being our baby for all these years ha!) I just wanted to add our story. We've had our (deer) "Lindsey" just a week. There's quite a problem with the peeing issue (Lucy has always used a potty-pad & aside from when she has had stomach bugs with accidents, potty has never been an issue with her...). So, I don't know yet just how the next chapter will go for us & our (deer) Chi but we have fallen in love with her & I pray our patience will hold out until she can develop into a well-behaved Chi. Anyone wanting to send thoughts/comments, please do so at tiresonly4tires@comcast.net Thx!
Hi I have a "deer" chihuahua as well. She's tall, skinny, a lean 8lbs and very light colored. She is a blonde gold color and quite literally looks just like a deer. And like most others I thought I had gotten a mini greyhound/chi mix. It's good to know she actually is purebreed, not that it really matters. But, my mother also has 2 chi's one apple, one deer and my dog just got out of heat. So, (fingers crossed) I should have some deer chi puppies here soon.
Hi everyone... so nice to read all the great stories about your Deer Chi's. I have one too! He is the center of my life! :)
as a pup he would wake up every few weeks and was NOTICEABLY taller than the night before! I had no idea there was even such a thing... Now, he cannot even walk outside without people stopping us to talk about his cute prance and to comment on how tall he is (he too looks like he's on stilts)
He is 2 1/2 years old now and weighs 5.6 lbs and is fawn colored (and yes, he was Bambi for halloween)
Penna & Mochi
I also have a deer chihuahua his name is Frisco. He is a brindle colored pinto. All white with brindle head and 3 brindle spots. I have discovered that the deer chihuahuas are better tempered than the apple heads. The vet techs at my vet's office just adore Frisco because of his temperment. I also have been asked what kind of dog he is from a chihuahua owner.
These are special dogs. Your baby is beautiful.
