Washington, D.C. (June 8, 2006) - Representative John Linder (R-GA) this week before the House Republican Policy Committee, as part of a Tax Reform Panel that also included former U.S. Senator Connie Mack (R-FL) and Representatives Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), Phil English (R-PA), and Michael Burgess (R-TX), outlined and answered questions regarding his FairTax proposal, H.R. 25. The FairTax will repeal the current income tax system and replace it with a revenue neutral personal consumption tax.

In prepared testimony, Linder outlined eight key principles he believes Congress must consider when debating any fundamental tax reform proposal. These principles are:

1. Fairness: It must protect the poor and treat everyone else the same. No exemptions – no exclusions – no advantages.

2. Simplicity: It must be easy to understand for all Americans – no matter one’s education, occupation, or station in life.

3. Voluntary: It must not be coercive or intrusive.

4. Transparency: We should all know what the government costs. There must be no “hidden” taxes.

5. Border-Neutral: Our exports must be unburdened by any tax component in the price system, while imports carry the same tax burden at retail as our domestic competition.

6. Industry-Neutral: It must be neutral between businesses and industries.

7. Strengthens Social Security: Fundamental reform must address the long-term solvency of Social Security.

8. Manageable Transition Costs: It must not be costly or difficult to implement.

“I truly believe that the principles I have outlined cannot be compromised. My bill is the only tax bill that ensures all of these qualities are met and allows our booming economy to compete globally,” said Linder.

The FairTax Rally at the Gwinnett Convention Center in Georgia just wasn't big enough for the supporters of the FairTax. 4,500 people filled the seats and the walls within the convention center Wednesday night to show their support for the FairTax! The packed house caused thousands of supporters to be turned away. Fire marshals had to step in, as they had to stop admittance due to fire code capacity. Congressman John Linder addressed the audience and joked about the lack of room for all the supporters, "We're sorry," Linder said. "Next time, we'll get you a bigger building."

Herman Cain and our own FairTax Communications Director, Ken Hoagland, had people coming out of their seats as they talked about how to fulfill the Founding Fathers' promise that this can be a government "of, by, and for the people." The passion in the room was electric. The crowd also heard from popular TV and radio personalities such as Sean Hannity, Clark Howard, John Stossel, and Neal Boortz. Boortz went on radio station News/Talk 750 WSB an hour before the show was set to start to tell supporters who were on their way that there was no more room. WSB broadcasted the rally live as thousands of supporters who couldn't get in listened just outside the convention center.

Linder informed the crowd that the Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert (R-IL), has set up a meeting with President Bush for Linder to have an opportunity to pitch the FairTax legislation. Linder acknowledged the large scope of this project. "Big ideas take time," he said. "But we've started to move the country, and they will start to move the Congress." The FairTax grassroots team from the national headquarters office in Houston and the twenty plus volunteers from as far away as the state of Utah worked diligently to keep up with the thousands wanting FairTax T-shirts, DVDs, and all types of FairTax materials. WSB had books going like hotcakes! T-shirts and DVDs were gone within 20 minutes of the doors being opened. The event was truly a grassroots extravaganza. We collected nearly 2000 petitions and nearly 5 percent of those were from out of state. This would not have been possible without your support!

I received the above in email and decided to show you what "one obscure congressman from Georgia", one talk show host, and what the American public can do.

My understanding is that Boortz is planning FairTax rallies across the country with one planned in Orlando sometime in the next few weeks. We have every intention of attending, and even volunteering to help in some way. I haven't heard a date, but will publish it so that you will have the same information I do and can plan on attending if at all possible.

For those who are Flat tax proponents, come over to the light! The Fair Tax is everything the Flat tax is and more! We've been living under a Flat tax since 1986. It hasn't stayed flat. it's been changed more than 9,000 times in 21 years! Under the flat tax you still pay an income tax and file a return. Under the Fair Tax, no income taxes, no withholding from your paycheck, and you don't file a return!

Everyone pays the same tax rate, whether you are Bill Gates or Joe Sixpack. Look at your tax return. How much did you pay in taxes and how much did you get back? I would bet there is a BIG difference.

Under the FairTax, you pay no income taxes. Everyone pays a tax at the retail level. You keep the withholding now being taken from your paycheck, you get a prebate every month equal to the amount your family would expect to pay on taxes for the basic necessities of life up to the poverty level. This removes the tax burden for those who live at or below the poverty level.

We have all been to those meetings where someone wants you to give over 100%. How about achieving 103%? What makes up 100% in life?

Here's a little mathematical formula that might help you answer these questions:

Vote Manatee

For those of you in Manatee County, here is a link to the Supervisor of Elections web page. From here, you get all the information you need to vote in the 2006 elections: where to register to vote, how to change/update your voter information (name, address, party affiliation etc), methods of voting (early and absentee voting) and who is on the ballot.

Actually, the ballot hasn't been posted yet, but the primary election is September 5, so if you don't get a newspaper, this is where you will be able to find out who and what will be on the ballot. Then, you can do your research to find out just who and what you want to vote for.

Please don't fail to vote, but just as bad is voting simply because there is an election. Educate yourself about the issues and the candidates. An educated voter votes with their head. You and I might differ on who we vote for, but I will never say anything about a voter who has a logical reason for voting the way they do. "Oh, he's so cute!" isn't a good reason to vote for someone. Nor is "but she's a woman!" While I haven't voted for a candidate for those particular reasons, I've made my share of mistakes in the voting booth. Mostly because I didn't do my homework, but sometimes because I didn't follow my instincts. A failing of mine. I have good life instincts when I listen to them.

I'm all about electing women, but I don't want a woman in office who will set the rest of us back ten or twenty years. This isn't the place (right now) for a lecture about putting women into office. This is about getting out to vote, but doing it smartly.

This is what you have to do. It's pretty simple, actually:

Vote

If you go to vote and have questions about how to fill out the ballot, ask a poll worker. If you mess up the ballot and accidentally vote for someone you didn't want to vote for, notify a poll worker. They will help you out.

If your candidate didn't win or your issue didn't pass, don't whine about it. Believe it or not, it's not the end of the world and there will be other elections.
